What is a Smart Work Zone?
Smart work zones are construction zones that use real-time sensor technology and messaging to inform drivers of work zone conditions. They use portable cameras along with traffic flow monitors and message signs to provide real time data to the traveling public. This equipment also includes the application of computers and communication equipment to relay data back to the project to better understands the traffic needs.
Why do we use Smart Work Zones?
The goal of smart work zones is to provide direct and daily feedback to motorists about travel information thru the work zone. This direct feedback to motorists can increase the safety for drivers and construction workers by displaying speeds and travel time through the work zones. The goal of this technology is to prevent collisions and provide travel times through the construction zone. This way motorist can plan their commute and anticipate any potential travel delays at the project.
How do they work?
Traffic data is obtained and analyzed in real-time, allowing information to be continuously updated and transmitted to motorists through the roadway traffic message signs on the project and through a work zone website. The work zone website is intended to be a travel tool so motorist can check on any traffic delays at the project in advance of any planned trips.
